  1.   case #10 - murder at huxley station

  4.    officer phil broad was on routine
  5.  
  6. patrol at 2 a.m., thursday, august
  7.  
  8. 29th. the temperature, at 50 degrees,
  9.  
  10. had turned cooler with the first hint
  11.  
  12. of fall. as he slowly drove over the
  13.  
  14. groton street tracks, heading east,
  15.  
  16. officer broad's headlights picked up a
  17.  
  18. single car parked in the lot, the corner
  19.  
  20. closest to the tracks. it was too late
  21.  
  22. for teenagers to be parked and too
  23.  
  24. early for the first commuters. officer
  25.  
  26. broad decided to investigate.
  27.  
  28. *
  29.    your phone rings at 6 a.m. chief
  30.  
  31. sabellico wants you over at the huxley
  32.  
  33. station, now! bob o'neil, huxley's
  34.  
  35. financial comptroller, has been found
  36.  
  37. dead, shot once between the eyes in the
  38.  
  39. commuter parking lot. when you arrive
  40.  
  41. at the station (c) at 6:30 a.m., the
  42.  
  43. body has already been removed and chief
  44.  
  45. sabellico is heading for his car. the
  46.  
  47. chief is going to 3 portock street (s)
  48.  
  49. to break the news to o'neil's family.
  50.  
  51. before he leaves, he takes you aside
  52.  
  53. for a little talk.

  56.    "you live in this town, so i'm sure
  57.  
  58. you know bob was being investigated by
  59.  
  60. the state attorney general's office for
  61.  
  62. alleged misuse of public funds in the
  63.  
  64. building of our new municipal complex.

  66. well, i found this note in o'neil's
  67.  
  68. pocket." the chief shows you a hand-
  69.  
  70. written note with the words, "i have
  71.  
  72. information which can get the state off
  73.  
  74. your back. meet me at the huxley station
  75.  
  76. parking lot at midnight. park in the
  77.  
  78. northwest corner, nearest the tracks."

  81.    the chief takes the note back, then
  82.  
  83. continues, "several of our leading
  84.  
  85. citizens were implicated in that state
  86.  
  87. investigation, so this whole thing has
  88.  
  89. to be handled with kid gloves. your job
  90.  
  91. is to find out who killed bob o'neil
  92.  
  93. without stepping on any important toes."

  96.    the chief squeezes his bulk behind
  97.  
  98. the wheel of his car, "keep in touch,
  99.  
  100. and do yourself a favor, don't offend 
  101.  
  102. anyone."
